Harry Frank Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Awards
The Foundation is receiving proposals from any of the social and natural sciences and aligned fields that promise to improve comprehension of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and belligerence. The topmost priority is afforded to research that tackles urgent, present-day issues of violence—what produces it, how it functions, and what prevents or alleviates it.
The Foundation is concerned with violence linked to many subjects, comprising, but not limited to, the following:
- War
- Crime
- Terrorism
- Family and intimate-partner relationships
- Climate instability and natural resource competition
- Racial, ethnic, and religious conflict
- Political extremism and nationalism
Why Apply For Harry Frank Guggenheim Awards?
The Foundation backs research that explores the basic mechanisms in the creation of violence, but priority is afforded to proposals that make a convincing case for the significance of potential findings for policies aimed at reducing these ills. Likewise, historical research is deliberated to the extent that it is applicable to a present situation of violence. Analyses of the effects of violence are welcome as long as a strong case is made that these outcomes may serve, in turn, as grounds for future violence.
Worth of HFG Distinguished Scholar Awards
Majority of awards fall within the span of $15,000 to $45,000 per year for length of one or two years.
Applications for greater amounts and longer length will be given consideration but have to be strongly justified.
The awards are granted to persons (or sometimes two or, hardly, three principal investigators) for particular projects, not general research support. They are not granted to institutions for institutional programs.
Be aware that persons who obtain research grants may be subject to taxation on the funds granted.
